National Case Management Week, recognized from October 8th to October 14^th, 2023, is a time to celebrate the incredible work of case managers who play a pivotal role in the healthcare industry. This year, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA), the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC), and the American Case Management Association (ACMA) are uniting under a common banner to raise awareness about the vital role of case managers. Together, they emphasize the 2023 theme ‘Keeping the Person at the Heart of Collaborative Care,’ reflecting the core principles of patient-centered care and teamwork in healthcare. In a world where healthcare is more complex than ever, this collaborative effort is not only timely but essential. 

Case (care) managers are the unsung heroes of healthcare. They are dedicated professionals who bridge the gaps in patient care, ensuring that patients receive the right care at the right time, in the right place. These individuals, often nurses or social workers, work tirelessly to navigate the complex healthcare system, advocating for patients, and improving the overall quality and cost-effectiveness of care. They act as advocates, coordinators, and navigators, working to improve patient outcomes and enhance the overall healthcare experience. Their role is indispensable in the modern healthcare landscape. 

This year’s theme highlights the patient as the focal point of healthcare. It’s a reminder that behind every diagnosis and treatment plan, there is a person with unique needs, preferences, and concerns. CMS reminds us that patient preferences and goals should be the focal point of all healthcare decisions and interventions. Case managers play a vital role in ensuring that the patient’s voice is heard and that their individualized care plan is developed and executed in alignment with the individual’s unique needs, values, and preferences. They are the advocates for patients, striving to provide person-centered care that promotes not just physical health but also emotional and social well-being. 

The collaboration between CMSA, CCMC, and ACMA during National Case Management Week sends a powerful message: case managers are essential, and their work impacts the lives of countless patients. By uniting as one voice, these organizations amplify their advocacy efforts and create a platform for sharing knowledge, experiences, and resources. They are raising awareness about the critical role of case managers and the impact they have on patient outcomes. They invite healthcare professionals, patients, and the general public to join in their collaborative efforts to raise awareness about the vital role of case managers.
