Digital Health Week (Nov. 14-20, 2022) is the annual celebration and recognition of how digital health is transforming the delivery of care across Canada. When you say “digital health” to 10 different people, you get 10 different definitions. Digital health has become both a buzzword and a necessity across health systems. So what does it really mean? What is digital health?
Digital health has become an umbrella term for a broad range of technologies, including health IT, wearable devices, virtual care, mobile health, electronic records, software that supports clinical decisions, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and so on.
Digital health encompasses all of these areas – and more. And while there is no single definition, digital health solutions exist at the core to drive digital transformation that improves health care and outcomes.
Why does it matter?
The past two years have been challenging for the Canadian healthcare system, but if there was one silver lining, it was the rapid adoption of digital tools. The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital health technologies, and the sector is expected to grow even more rapidly in the coming years. According to a 2021 study by Statista, the digital health market is projected to hit $660 billion globally by 2025. This exponential expansion is fuelled by a growing demand from patients and healthcare systems.

A recent study by Canada Health Infoway found that:
- 9 in 10 Canadians who had a virtual visit with their health care provider were satisfied with their visit
- 84% of physicians who use virtual care say it improves their patients’ access to care
- 88% of clinicians said the seamless sharing of patient information between providers would improve the coordination of care
What’s next?
Digital health isn’t going anywhere. As more people become comfortable using digital solutions, health technology companies, like Strata Health, are working closely with health systems to accelerate transformation and build a robust digital ecosystem in Canada.
However, it’s important to remember that with limited dollars and capacity, the true promise of digital transformation is only possible when technology supports providers in operating at the top of their licenses, enhancing efficiencies, care, and outcomes.
