Q: What drew you to Strata Health?

A:  About three years ago I was nearing the end of my time at SAIT and was applying for Junior Developer roles, and I saw Strata Health as one of the companies advertising on Indeed’s job board’s job posting. I remembered my brother got his first development role there, and all he ever spoke about was the amazing experience he had working at Strata, both in terms of the culture and the experience he gained as a developer. It sounded like a fantastic place to work and grow as a developer, so it was a no-brainer.

Q: How long have you been with the company?

A:  Just short of 3 ½ years.

Q: What does your job entail?

A:  Most of the time my job entails fixing bugs in our system or making improvements throughout to provide a better overall experience when using Strata PathWays. My tasks can range from optimizing query performance to reducing wait/response time throughout our application. Writing more robust test cases to cover expected results for our system’s use cases or ensuring that modifications to patients’ records are properly tracked to provide up to date and accurate auditing details on all patient transactions.

Q: What do you think sets you apart in your field?

A:  I think what sets me apart would be my willingness to account for different angles of approach in solution to a problem. I believe as a developer, you should always have an open mind. Getting a second set of eyes, or a different opinion, allows you to see how other developers approach a problem and how they implement their solution is one of the most valuable tools I can use to improve my own trouble shooting skills.

Q: What challenges have you faced in your career?

A: A challenge I face is something called edge cases. This will get easier over time as I gain more experience, sometimes it’s difficult to think of all the possible scenarios where something could go wrong and to plan accordingly.

Q: Tell us about a professional success story that you’re proud of.

A: Most recently a success story I’m proud of was when I was able to resolve a fairly “low level” issue in our application. We were encountering errors at runtime, and an exception was being produced that indicated weaving did not occur properly during our build process. Weaving is enabled to allow for lazy loading to occur on our entities which provides improved performance by avoiding fetching unnecessary data. After I found the root cause of the issue, I was able to reintroduce weaving on our entities.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: If you wish to improve, be content to appear clueless or stupid in extraneous matters.

Q: How would your best friend describe you in three words?

A: Loyal, Honest, Introspective

Q: Tell us a surprising or fun fact about you.

A:  I am an identical twin.
