Island Health, in partnership with Strata Health, has launched a new online self-referral pathway to help pregnant people sign up for prenatal care more easily. The new service makes it simple for expectant families to find and connect with the services they need.
Right From the Start registrants will receive a phone call from a public health nurse with support and resources matched to their needs, including but not limited to prenatal education, postpartum care, support with feeding, information to inform immunization decision making, and referrals to other care providers and community resources.
Since 2006, Strata Health has been proud to partner with Island Health, delivering digital solutions that enhance healthcare delivery. This latest initiative puts perinatal care directly in the hands of patients, making access simpler, faster, and more patient focused. Through the new online portal, individuals can self-refer to services, or clinicians can submit requests on their behalf.

Strata Health designed a user-friendly form, directly embedded on Island Health’s website. When an individual completes the form, a service request is automatically generated in Strata PathWays. The user selects their nearest health unit, and the request is routed there for direct follow-up with the perinatal patient. Currently, 19 health units across Island Health are receiving these requests, with approximately 401 referrals already processed since the launch on November 26, 2025.
“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to putting patients first,” said Peter Smith, President, Strata Health. “It respects individual rights, promotes patient-centered care, and improves health outcomes through timely access. By advancing digital health and strengthening our long-standing partnership with Island Health, we’re creating a more connected and engaging experience for expectant families.
This is just the beginning. In the future, Strata PathWays could also manage referrals and appointments generated from these service requests, creating an even more seamless experience for patients and providers alike. By integrating these capabilities, Island Health and Strata Health aim to create a fully connected care experience that reduces administrative burden, improves coordination, and ensures patients receive timely, personalized support. These advancements will strengthen collaboration between providers and deliver an even more seamless journey for expectant families.
